November 28-December 2, 2011

This week was a winter wonderland.

This week in Math we continued dividing 4 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. We also divided money, and learned divisibility rules. The rule for dividing by 2 is if the number is even, it is divisible by 2. The rule for 2 is if the sum of the digits is divisible by 3, it is divisible by 3. The rule for 4 is if the last 2 digits are divisible by 4, you can divide it by 4. The rule for 5 is if the last number is 5 or 0, is it divisible by 5. The rule for 6 is if the number is divisible by both 2 and 3, then it is divisible by 6. (There is no rule for 7 or 8). The rule for 9 is if the sum of the digits is divisible by 9, then it’s divisible by 9. The rule for 10 is if the last digit is 0.

This week in Language Arts, we learned about quotation marks. Quotation marks are the marks that you put before and after something someone says. We also learned about 3 different points of view. The first one is called 1st person point of view. First person is when the person telling the story is a character in the story. The second is 3rd person limited. That is when you only know one person’s thoughts and feelings. The third is 3rd person omniscient. That’s when you know more than one person’s thoughts and feelings.

This week in Science, we started reading different space books and answering questions. We also talked about stars and constellations. Also we studied the vocabulary and took our science test.

We had a 2 hour delay this week due to icy roads.

This week was phenomenal.

This week was Alien-tastic!

This week in Math we learned how to divided 3 numbers by 1 number. It was uncomplicated!! Lots and lots of people got 100%!!! We also did division patterns. That was also easy.

In Science, we are reading about the moon. What do you know about the moon? Did you know the moon goes around the Earth? Well, now you do. This moon has no air, food, water, or life on it!
This week in reading, we learned when to use commas in a sentence. We also read more of My Teacher is an Alien. The book is magnificent so far. We are also reading a book called The Young Man and the Sea. It’s great! I’m so glad Mrs. Tomlin is reading it to us. (Thank you Mrs. Tomlin!)

In Success Time we are learning about decimals. Sometimes it’s hard and lots of time it’s easy.

This week was a breeze!

November 7-11, 2011

This week was out of this world.

In Language Arts we commenced reading a book called My Teacher is an Alien. It’s about a malicious teacher, Mr. Smith, who is not authentically a human. Then we learned about similes and metaphors. Here are some examples: The man was as ferocious as a dragon. That was a simile because it used the words like or as. A metaphor is she was a butterfly. You use the words is, was, and were. Then we did a free write where you could write about anything. It could be about slaying a brutal dragon. And that’s what we did in Language Arts.

In Math, we multiplied decimals by decimals. Then we did two reviews for the chapter test. On Friday we took the test. We know we all got good grades because Mrs. Tomlin gave us Math Smarts.

In Social Studies, we picked one Native American tribe and did a glog all about that tribe. We went on Google.com and found images and them we wrote fascinating facts about the different categories. So, that is what we did in Social Studies this week.

In Science, we did a season diagram about winter, spring, summer, and fall. We have seasons because the Earth is tilted. So, on the Northern Hemisphere when it is winter, on the other side of the world (Southern Hemisphere) it’s summer. The Earth tilts so you can have seasons. My favorite season is fall. You might have different favorites, but you wouldn’t if the earth didn’t tilt.

This week was sensational!

This week was spook-tastic!

This week in Language Arts we learned about personification. Personification is when you give a nonliving object human qualities. Example: The wind whispered. In Kid Blog we finally got to comment! Our comments need to be meaningful though, or they don't get posted. We got to do our tall tale in Story Jumper. Most of us are done, while a few are still typing. We are also learning about plot. There are four basic parts in a book. One: the problem. The main character has to have a problem. Two: the rising action. This is where the character has more problems. Three: the climax. The climax is usually the highlight of the book. Four: the resolution. The resolution is what happens to the characters at the end. We also taped our Tall Tale Readers' Theater this week.

This week in Math we learned to multiply a decimal by a whole number. It's really easy. First, you just multiply. Then the only different part is you put the decimal in the right place. Sounds hard? Not at all. Here's and example: 2.7 x 4. First you multiply 7 by 4 which is 28. You put down the 8 and carry the 2. Then you do 4 x 2 which is 8 and you add the 2 you carried which makes it 10. Then you count how many numbers are after the decimal and that is how many numbers need to be after the decimal in your answer. So the answer is 10.8. We also learned to multiply decimals by decimals. It's easier to do than to say. But I can show you an example: 0.2 x 0.6 = .12. I'll try to show you, so 0.2 x 0.6 is the samething as 2 x 6 but with decimals.

In Social Studies, we are learning abou the Native Americans. We finished all 7 areas where the Native Americans lived. Now we just finished the four other tribes--the Makas, the Taos, the Iowas, and the Senecas.

We had our Halloween party on Monday.

Roy was Student of the Month.
